Everyone recognizes that half of what they say is half-truths, and all of what they say is lies. A political scandal is a great story for the nightly news report. They're the butt of many jokes, they even have their own special spot for cartoon mockery in the editorial section of your local newspaper. People recognize that during events like debates, politicians never actually answer the questions, nor is it even a debate as far as the dictionary goes. It all seems so harmless - we can laugh, jeer, and and shake our heads, then proudly drop our ballots in the box come November. Unfortunately, the reality isn't quite as funny as we make it out to be, and it's anything but harmless.
The last election was full of so much emotional pandering, line-toeing, poo-pooing, negative nancy-ing, and baby-mamaing that I literally was sick to my stomach (ulcers). We just don't seem to care, we still buy into it, we still become emotionally connected to OUR candidate. Even though it is almost universally known that politicians are almost always corrupt, even though politicians are ousted for their blatant lies during campaign seasons, and even though people all across the world are dying because of US politicians and the US armed forces, we still buy into OUR guy.
Their meaningless slogans are cleverly crafted by marketeers to incite the very feelings that we feel. "Country First" inspires some sort of vague patriotism, some sort of all-round goodness, while "Hope" and "Change" obviously affect strong emotions of hopeyness and changery. Though "Country First" strikes me as somewhat more socialist than Obama's; unless McCain actually meant country as in, the dirt and soil bounded by imaginary lines at the north and south that we call the USA. But I still don't get how it's "First." And while we're all feeling very hopey, very country first-y, these clever suits are robbing us blind and sending our military around the world to kill and be killed. But the sick fact is that we're not even blind to it - we can all see it for what it is.
Browsing WikiPedia, I found this list of political scandals for as long as there has been US politics. The fact that this list even exists should make us realize that the position of senator, president, house speaker, mayor, police officer, or any other position of power where you are given so-called authority over people are NOT filled by caring, kind, loving and gentle people. These offices attract the most evil, the people who will use any means necessary to get what they want. To give them the benefit of the doubt any longer is regular ol' insanity. Our system of false philanthropy, forced redistribution, legislated morality, and organized murder is a failed and corrupt one. The law is meant to serve the people, to protect our rights, to act as a collective of our self-defense. The law was not created to line the pockets of politicians and satisfy elected officials needs, wants, or ideals.
But we all want our politicians to do something good for us. Some of us want them to raise taxes on the rich so we can help out the needy. Others of us want them to teach our children for us. And even more of us want them to build our roads, manage our commerce and economy, and wage mindless war across the globe. But with these vague, false philanthropic ideals that we all want from Government, we are giving them more power to decide what is right, what is wrong, and what they get from you. We use the Law, which is violence, to make these things happen. How can good come from evil acts?
We can't allow ourselves to remain happily ignorant of the corruption of Law and government. We must stop giving up our freedoms daily because we believe we are helping other people. We cannot use the Law to affect good, only to prevent injustice. Most importantly, we must stop pretending that the evil acts of politicians are something funny. There's nothing funny about "Country First."
