No Libertarian Gift Guide would be complete without mentioning a few of the most well-known and significant books in the Libertarian movement. Although we could have easily filled this entire guide with classic works, we tried to keep it short and focus on the most influential and well-known titles.
For A New Liberty - Murray N. Rothbard
This classic work was written at the end of the 1970's and demonstrates how you can apply Libertarian principles to everyday problems. This includes almost everything the state generally takes care of today, from health-care and roads to welfare and environmental concerns. No Libertarian should be without this book.

The Ethics of Liberty - Murray N. Rothbard
The standard text in Libertarian natural-law based rights & ethics. Rothbard presents detailed explanations of natural rights theory, self-ownership, contracts, law, aggression and demonstrates the immorality of the state to name a few. Your Libertarian may have already read this, but if they don't have their own copy, it would be a welcomed addition to any one's book shelf.

Collected Works of Lysander Spooner
Lysander Spooner is best known as the guy who opened up a private post office to compete with the US Postal Service in the 1800's. As you can imagine, it was eventually shut down by the Feds. Spooner was also a radical pamphleteer who wrote many hard-hitting anti-state essays. I don't know a single Libertarian who wasn't changed after reading No Treason. In this essay, Spooner shreds the idea of social contract with biting analysis. There are two very good anthologies of Spooner's most well-known writing. One is published by the Mises Institute (Let's Abolish Government) and the other is out-of-print (The Lysander Spooner Reader). We recommend the latter if you can get it. If the Libertarian in your life hasn't read Spooner, be prepared for some intense conversations.

If you're Libertarian is young, they have probably heard of this book, but haven't read it. This controversial work came out in 1974 as a response to John Rawls' A Theory of Justice. The argument for a minimal state has many Libertarians still arguing today. It was the most well-known Libertarian book of its time and still popular today.

This New York Times best seller was extremely controversial because of the implications alluded by the author.
